End-To-End Cell–Pack–System Solution: Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery - White Paper

Industry has become more interested in developing optimal energy storage systems as a result of increasing gasoline prices and environmental concerns. A major application for energy storage use is hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs). The rechargeable energy storage system is a key design issue, as it dominates overall vehicle performance. The system as a whole must deliver high performance in terms of energy density and power management throughout a variety of driving profiles. The batteries are key elements in sustaining power and energy requirements of the system. However, in many applications the required power and thermal management are key factors for battery sizing. Thermal stability, charge capabilities, lifecycle and cost are also important considerations during the system design process. ANSYS helps engineers deliver hybrid electric vehicle innovation through end-to-end cell–pack–system simulation that includes multiple physics (electrochemistry, electrical, electronics, thermal, fluidic) and controls (embedded software). A simulation-based approach enables designers to achieve shorter design cycles and optimize battery performance, safety and lifespan.

16X Speedup in ANSYS Maxwell DSO on 32-core High-Performance Compute Farm Doubles Traction Motor Design Productivity at General Motors - White Paper

Optimizing the design of traction motors used to drive electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) is challenging because automakers have little experience in this area. Electromagnetic simulation plays a critical role by evaluating the performance of design concepts, such as by computing the torque profile of the machine. In the past, it took hundreds of hours to perform electromagnetic simulation on a single design iteration, which hurt productivity by leaving engineers waiting for results. General Motors (GM) developed a high-performance computing (HPC) environment using surplus hardware with a 32-core compute farm that provided a 16 timesx speedup on electromagnetic simulation, reducing solution time to less than five hours.

The Race to 6G — Faster Networks and Devices Promise a World of New Possibilities - White Paper

The impact of electronics is being felt in every industry. One key enabler is the continuing evolution of the integrated circuit (IC) toward higher speeds and lower power consumption, providing the ability to make products of all kinds smaller and more powerful. Increasing frequencies and shrinking geometries create a range of new challenges for engineers and designers: signal integrity, electromagnetic interference, thermal performance and mechanical integrity ―problems that cross physics disciplines and must be studied at both component and system levels. Multiphysics simulation is usually thought of as an engineering tool, but it has business implications as well, especially applicable to today’s highly competitive marketplace.
