Reducing Current Stress in Switchgear - ANSYS Advantage - V13 I1

In an emergency or when maintenance is required, high-voltage, high-current electric power must be quickly and safely disconnected. However, simply separating two contacts, as in a light switch, is not sufficient because high current makes the surrounding gas between the separating contacts conductive. This creates an electric arc over which the current continues to flow, and the current causes additional stresses on the associated busbar. Lucy Electric engineers estimated the electrodynamic forces and applied ANSYS Mechanical to optimize the shape, placement and durability of special splitter plates. Using simulation, the company increased the performance of switchgear designs quickly and economically and delivered superior, reliable energy products to market.

Fusion Power is the Sun in a Bottle - ANSYS Advantage - V13 I1

The sun and stars are powered by light atoms that fuse at extremely high temperatures and pressures. Reproducing this process on earth has the potential to provide a sustainable solution to the world’s energy requirements, but this requires overcoming some very difficult technical challenges. Engineers at the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development are using ANSYS Mechanical and ANSYS SpaceClaim to optimize the design of critical structures in the Demonstration Power Station project, which will produce fusion power on the same scale as a modern electric power generation station.

Balloon-Borne Vehicles Provide a Bird’s-Eye View - Article - ANSYS Advantage - V12 I2

It costs hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars to launch a satellite into a geosynchronous orbit where it hovers above a point on earth for observation or communications. Now, World View’s balloon-borne Stratollite vehicles can carry large payloads to altitudes up to 95,000 feet and park them there for weeks or months at a cost orders of magnitude less than a satellite or other comparable technologies. World View engineers saved an estimated eight months and about $600,000 by using ANSYS simulation software to determine the right design before building and testing a prototype.

Targeting a Tumor - Article - ANSYS Advantage - V12 I2

By devising a new computational method that tracks the flow of therapeutic drug particles in an aerosol from the lips to the lungs, researchers can deposit a drug on a targeted lung tumor with 90 percent efficiency. This is a major improvement over the 20 percent efficiency of conventional aerosol treatment methods. One key to the success of this new computational method is the development of a human digital twin that can be made patient-specific using the real geometry of the patient’s lungs..

Sure Footing for Onshore Drilling Sites - Article - ANSYS Advantage - V12 I1

When the lifespan of working platforms made of boxes that raise oil workers’ equipment over waterlogged areas did not meet expectations, engineers turned to ANSYS simulation. The time to develop new boxes has been reduced by 90 percent, and the lifespan is seven times greater than that of the previous design.

Comfortable Rail Travel - Article - ANSYS Advantage - V11 I1

Regulations and customer demands put pressure on rail designers to deliver passenger coaches with comfortable climates. In the past, Siemens engineers spent about four months testing passenger coaches in a climate wind tunnel to validate the design of the heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) system. Now they use ANSYS Fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to validate the design before building the first coach to reduce the testing time and cost by up to 50 percent.
