Biomedical

Biomedical models are characterized by highly amorphous shapes without sharp edges. Often these models are from scan data and are in a faceted format. For Explicit analysis, these models are best meshed with pure uniform hexahedral mesh.

ANSYS ICEM CFD HEXA could give an excellent mesh, but requires some user interaction to manipulate/optimize the blocking structure. With body fitted Cartesian, mesh can be generated automatically with the click of a button. It is a patch independent mesher that works well with STL and/or CAD data.

The above example shows a BFCart mesh of a Femur (Cut away view), colored by quality. The mesh was generated automatically for an Explicit solver (uniform mesh).

The next image is a Fetus modeled for Fluent. It features 2 to 1 hanging node refinement.

If we move the scan plane over and zoom in, you can see how the mesh wraps around the details.
