A strategic position

Both a European metropolis and the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region (France's most important after Paris), Lyon covers 18.5 square miles. It is the number 2 conurbation in France (1.2 million residents for an area of 1.2 square miles). Every year the city attracts a great number of visitors for business and tourism. Located between northern and southern Europe, the Lyon area has been throughout history a stopping place for trade and cultural exchanges. Centuries later, it continues to fulfill this role in a variety of fields.

riversThe Lyon metropolitan area in the heart of the Rhône-Alpes region : Any presentation of the capital city of Lyon must be given in the context of the entire region. The Rhône-Alpes region claims more than 5 million inhabitants (9.5% of the French population). It is one of the most industrialized regions of France and is home to 50 world leaders in various economic sectors. Lyon is the binding force in a dense and well-balanced galaxy of mid-size cities (Grenoble, Chambéry, Saint-Etienne, Annecy, etc.) whose increasingly close relations allow the entire Rhône-Alpes region to shine amongst the most influential regions of Europe.
