Water treatment tanks are common in the water industry. They are used in sewage treatment works to separate precipitate solids from effluent water, and for similar purification tasks. These tanks are often very large with only small inlets and outlets, with very large residence times.
The ANSYS CFX software is very effective for this type of application, because of the multiphase nature of these flows. The flows are not just two phase with liquid and solid, but they are often actually three phase as bubbles of certain gases are pumped through the mixture.
