Stirred Vessels

Stirred vessels are one of the types of mixing vessel used in the process industry, and are used in many cases where the liquid flow rate is low relative to the size of vessel. Such a stirred vessel usually consists of one or more impellers in a cylindrical tank. The tank will often also contain baffles, to prevent solid body rotation, and to promote mixing.

This type of flow is modeled well by the Multiple Frames of Reference capability of the ANSYS CFX software, in which the stationary part of the vessel is modeled in a fixed frame of reference, while the impeller is modeled in a rotating frame of reference with a special interface between the frames. The physical processes promoted by the mixing are also modeled, perhaps using the multiphase or chemical reactions capabilities of CFX.
