Spray Drying

Spray dryers are used in the formation of dried foodstuffs, and other products, such as coffee granules. Liquid solutions of the product are fed through a nozzle to form a spray in a drying vessel, which often contains a swirling flow of hot air which evaporates the solvent from the droplets.

This type of process can be studied very effectively in the ANSYS CFX software. The evaporation of the droplets is modeled using the Particle Transport Model, and the swirling flow in the vessel can be modeled using the Second Moment Closure turbulence models.
