Optimization of Tundishes

ANSYS CFX includes efficient multiphase models which simulate the behavior of tundish inclusions of multiple sizes and types. Buoyancy effects and gas injection, both of which influence the flow patterns, can be included, allowing engineers to reliably establish optimal combinations of baffles and weirs.

CFX can also model the changes in metal depth and mixing during tundish operation. When alloy composition is changed between batches, CFX can therefore determine how quickly the new grade will be established in the caster.

Distribution of inclusions with a rise velocity of 1mm/s
Distribution of inclusions with a rise velocity of 10mm/s.
Distribution of inclusions with a rise velocity of 100mm/s.

The distribution of inclusions with a variety of rise velocities is investigated in a simple unbaffled tundish. An algebraic slip model provides fast solutions in cases such as this. Simulation provides tundish design ensuring effective inclusion flotation.
