The EBECC Committee is pleased to announce the following keynote speakers for the event.  Further details of their presentations are listed on the preliminary agenda.

Jacqueline Balian – Director, Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers
Jacqueline BalianJacqueline Balian is a director of CIBSE Certification, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

CIBSE Certification is one of the bodies approved by Government to accredit individuals as competent to provide Energy Certificates under the EPBR. Jacqueline is also CIBSE’s Director of Information and publisher of its many guides and technical advice documents.

Jacqueline has been with CIBSE for seven years. Prior to this she worked in commercial publishing and Government media relations.

Dr Fahim Sadek - Structures Group, Building and Fire Research Laboratory
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Dr. Fahim SadekDr. Sadek is a research structural engineer in the Building and Fire Research Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  Dr. Sadek has extensive experience in finite element modeling and computer simulation of linear and nonlinear, structural response; particularly for structures subjected to seismic, wind, and other extreme loads.  His research specialties include mitigation of progressive collapse, nonlinear structural system behavior under extreme loads, active and passive structural control, and structural reliability.  Dr. Sadek is the co-author of “Ground Motion and Response Spectra” in The Seismic Design Handbook (2001).  He is also the author and co-author of more than fifty technical publications.

Dr. Sadek investigated the structural performance and aircraft impact damage of the World Trade Center Towers as part of the NIST investigation into the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings.  Currently, Dr. Sadek co-leads the NIST project on mitigation of progressive collapse of structural systems.  The project focuses on the development of technical criteria for progressive collapse resistance provisions for building codes and standards.

Dr. Sadek is the recipient of the Department of Commerce’s Gold Medal Award in 2005 for his role in conducting the NIST federal building and fire safety investigation of the World Trade Center disaster, and the Department of Commerce’s Silver Medal Award in 2007 for his role in conducting the NIST reconnaissance following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  He also received the Building and Fire Research Laboratory Communication Award in 2002.

Darren Woolf – Associate Director, Arup
Darren WoolfDarren Woolf obtained a Ph.D. in fluid mechanics at the University of Leeds using experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. Since joining Arup in 1995 he has been involved in a large number of built environment and water related projects throughout the world using advanced analysis to assess and optimise the performance of systems. He currently leads a team of building physicists engaged in delivering these schemes
