Fidelity and accuracy are critical in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. After all, physical prototyping and testing can only be reduced if one can expect accurate simulation results. But up to now, high fidelity, high accuracy results have come with a price. Complex, realistic geometries have required hours of manual effort to clean up the model and prepare the mesh. Users have been tempted to cut corners and take shortcuts that speed up prep but take a toll on accuracy and fidelity. There is no way of knowing just how those inaccuracies skew results, putting any recommendations in doubt. For example, if you don’t resolve a boundary layer correctly then any aerodynamic drag figures could be highly inaccurate.

"Until recently, quality processes known as software verification and validation were typically used as qualification of commercial grade software in many software quality assurance programs. Many believed that commercial grade dedication was not an option for complex items such as computer programs. Although discussed in terms of plant structures, systems, and components in 10CFR21, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) concluded that design and analysis software could meet the definition of a commercial grade item in the U.S. NRC Safety Evaluation Report (SER) of Topical Report.

In this report, the NRC noted that existing software quality assurance practices that rely on verification and validation alone may not be sufficient to accept commercial grade computer programs for use in safety-related applications. The NRC emphasized that commercially produced computer programs used for safety-related design and analysis are considered to be safety-related, and safety-related items must be either designed and manufactured in accordance with a quality assurance program that meets the requirements of Appendix B to 10CFR50, or dedicated for use in a safety-related"

Breakthrough in Brake Sequeal Prediction Helps to Eliminate Noise Problems Early in Design Process - White Paper

Engineers have succeeded in recent years in reducing many types of automobile noise. However, friction-induced squeal in automotive brakes is an increasing source of customer complaints. Currently, brake noise is one of the top warranty issues that automobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers face. A recent breakthrough is an integrated approach to brake squeal prediction: It incorporates bidirectional computer-aided design (CAD) connectivity, automated meshing and connectivity, flexibility to use a linear and/or nonlinear solver, parametric and sensitivity studies, and a wide range of graphical outputs. This integrated approach substantially reduces setup time, correlates well with physical testing, maintains in-sync models with production and the supply chain, and makes it possible to automatically evaluate a large number of design alternatives to quickly identify the optimal design.The new method enables first-time virtual design of cost effective, quiet braking systems for multiple platforms in far less time than is possible with conventional methods.
