Finite Element Stress and Vibration Analyses for a Space Telescope
In this paper, finite element models are presented that were generated for a proposed space telescope using the ANSYS parametric design language (APDL). Full three-dimensional and an axisymmetric model were used to analyse the telescope under several loading conditions such as gravitational acceleration and thermal loading. These models were based on a mechanical athermalisation design concept, in which a Delrin tube was used to compensate the axial thermal deformation between the mirror and the lens. A modal analysis was carried out using the three dimensional model in order to determine the fundamental natural frequency for different materials and holding positions. For stress analysis, the axisymmetric model was used and compared to the three-dimensional model.
