Analysis of Glass Tempering Process Using the Finite Element Method

Glass tempering is strengthening of glass by inducing residual stresses due to rapid cooling. In order to improve the tempering quality of glassware the physical phenomena that takes place during the process - flow of the cooling air around the product, heat transfer between the glass product and the cooling air and the resulting stress distribution due to viscoelastic nature of glass – must be analyzed. Here, a numerical method is devised to simulate the glass tempering process by using FLOTRAN and ANSYS. Element FLUID 142 is used to determine the velocity solution around the glass product and temperature solution in the glass and air. VISC 89 is used to determine the residual stress distribution.
