ANSYS ICEM CFD has a Modular Philosophy. There are moduals for each of our mesh generators and for post processing. There central modual that ties these all together is "MED" and it is included with any of the other moduals. Originally, MED was an acronym for "Mesh EDitor", but after a decade of development, it now includes translators, geometry creation and editing tools, Mesh Diagnostic and Mesh edting tools, scripting tools, and output interfaces and Post Processing.
With hundreds of solvers being used for CFD and FEA, the philosophy behind ANSYS ICEM CFD's integrated structure is to provide the user with a single environment ideally suited for all grid generation requirements. The ANSYS ICEM CFD Mesh Editor (MED) is just that, all wrapped up in a nice, easy-to-use, modern interface.
ANSYS ICEM CFD MED contains a Geometry Database that can import CAD data directly from a variety of commercial and standardized formats. It can also import and work with a number of Faceted data formats. Once imported, powerful tools are at your control to assemble, cleanup, and repair the geometry for your specific requirements.

Med also integrates our modular meshers with your process. It provides a frame work to setup mesh parameters and to run the meshers. It also handles all the behind the scenes parameter and data files required. One of the advanced features is its ability to easily combine meshing moduals in process. For instance, with one apply you can generate a mesh that combines the advantages of our Shell meshing, Tetra meshing, Prism Meshing and Cartesian Meshing.

Our Mesh diagnositcs, qualily, cutplanes and mesh display allow the user to quickly diagnose problems.

Our Mesh Editing is clearly best in class. In a addition to a wide range of top notch automatic and manual mesh element and node edting tools, Med has the unique advantage of respecting the geometry. The Mesh sits on the geometry and knows about the location of feature curves, etc. Automatic and manual mesh editing processes maintain the geometric integrity by respecing surfaces and features.

Med then handles issues related to outputing your mesh to your FEA or CFD solvers.
