The construction and equipment industry is one beneficiary of agricultural mechanization and building booms in developing countries, including China and India. Likewise, these growing economies have increased the global demand for metals and natural materials, boosting the mining equipment industry.

Great technological advances are taking place in the heavy equipment sector on two fronts. First, advances in sensors, actuators and advanced electronics are being leveraged. For instance, modern tractors, harvesters and planters are equipped with computer monitoring systems, GPSs and self-steering systems. Secondly, increasing concerns over fuel costs and engine exhaust emissions have spurred technology advancements, such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel particulate filters (DPFs).
